The French defender is known for hitting the ground running. At his previous club, which he joined at 13 and remained with for a decade before his summer move to the south coast club, his first appearance saw him enter as a replacement against Monaco. The game finished with him providing an assist with a powerful left-footed delivery and then scoring a late winner. Aged just 18, Truffert sent a shot underneath the goalkeeper, who now visits Bournemouth with his present side. “I dashed off in joy and slid on my knees,” Truffert says, “as you imagine doing as a youngster after netting your debut goal.”

An Impressive Beginning in the English top division

The defender has shone for Bournemouth right from the start, commencing with a fearless display at Anfield where he handled the Liverpool star. During that game, he also surpassed the previous left-back and has been ever-present in the league so far this campaign.

“We know we lost,” he states of the Liverpool game, “so it cannot be perfect, but I believe we put in a strong performance. I was very excited because it was my initial outing and it was a very good night. We have begun well, but now we need to continue and win this week.”

The Key to Settling In

Hearing Truffert talk about his £11m move, the first transfer of his playing days, it is no wonder he has slotted in so seamlessly. Team officials describe an smart person and he is evidently switched on. He understood the advantages of completing the move pre-season, to settle during the preparatory period, and has invested the previous 24 months taking English classes, conscious how useful they would be if he achieved his ambition of playing in England's top division.

“That’s why I can talk in the language,” remarks the 23-year-old, a underplayed comment given this premier in-depth discussion is conducted completely in English. “I think it is important to have interests beyond the game, to alter your thinking and focus on different matters.” Upon hearing that this says a lot of his nature, he avoids taking credit. “Maybe, but it was my parents who advised me it was essential.”

Early Years

His relatives, including his junior sibling Florian, a central player at Rennes, were present with him when he signed. Perhaps it was fate. He was from Liège, Belgium, but when he was half a year old, his family relocated to Southampton because of his father's work as a research facility head. They remained for 24 months in the region.

“My dad claims that I began walking on the seaside in town,” Truffert reveals. “Following that period, we went back to Belgium for a short period and then moved to France.”

National Team Achievements

He has earned a cap once by Les Bleus, in recently, and the previous year he was in the France team that finished second at the Olympic Games, the award earning him a French knighthood. “I have the documents to show I have the honor,” he states, showing a proud grin. “The French legend, among the greatest French players,” Truffert says. “When I was younger I played as a wide attacker, so this is the reason I admired him. When I was about in my late teens I switched to left-back. At the Olympics I played primarily in defense, so his deputy mainly spoke to me, but when it was a collective meeting he [Henry] imparted much knowledge. His tactical understanding was incredible, you could feel his experience and he was eager to share it to us.”

Style of Play

Truffert was identified as an ideal fit for the coach's style, which is underpinned by intensity. “When you apply much more intensity than your opponent, I think it’s the best way to win,” Truffert explains. “You have to do other things, of course, but if you commence by winning more duels than your foe, you have a much better chance to win. We run a lot because everybody wants to attack, but each also desires to defend.

“For us it’s not solely the defense's job and attackers who attack. It’s the entire team. We like to act as a unit on the pitch – and that’s the best way to win.”

Leadership and Experience

He held the armband at Stade Rennais last season and at Bournemouth he demonstrates through action; he practices as he performs and is seen as a perfect professional. He is also very knowledgeable for his age with over two hundred career appearances and has competed in the UCL, Europa League and UECL. In 2022-23, his old team completed a league double over a star-studded Paris Saint-Germain side. The English division, he states, was the subsequent natural move.

Truffert sounded out acquaintances and past colleagues, including a top player. “I think he’s among the finest dribblers I’ve observed. Another global star was also challenging to mark and you learn a lot against such talents because they can change a match,” Truffert notes. “Now at his current club, he features on the left side, but when he was at our former club he was often on the right so I had to face him a lot in training.

“It was positive for my growth to progress. He informed me the intensity is very different to Ligue 1. In France, it is maybe a bit more tactical – here all fixtures you have to cover ground, without a break.”
