Ex- FBI head James Comey has entered an innocent plea to giving untrue testimony to congressional representatives and impeding a lawmaking procedure.

The former director's attorney filed the plea acting as his counsel in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.

Patrick Fitzgerald stated he would attempt to have the proceedings thrown out for multiple reasons including that his defendant, a detractor of President Donald Trump, was being singled out.

Mr Comey was indicted soon after the former president urged his attorney general to proceed against him.

Court Developments

At the proceedings on Wednesday, the defense counsel the legal representative told the magistrate they planned to file various legal requests to throw out the proceedings before a legal hearing, arguing the prosecution was vindictive and that a government lawyer was improperly designated to handle the proceedings.

Mr Comey's case was initially overseen by a Virginia prosecutor, who left his position under pressure from Trump after his probe into a different opponent - New York Attorney General Letitia James - was unable to initiate prosecution.

Judicial Environment

Mr Comey appeared in optimistic frame of mind as he came into the courtroom on Wednesday, speaking with his attorneys and sharing humor. He was joined by his wife, his wife and offspring Maureen Comey, a federal prosecutor who the former government terminated.

After listening to the judge state his rights and the dual charges against him in court on mid-week, the defendant was inquired if he comprehended the charges.

"Yes your honour. Appreciate it," he stated to the judge.

Previous Events

James Comey was the FBI Director from four years and was dismissed about four months into Donald Trump's first term as president. At the period, he was overseeing an examination into foreign election meddling and whether there were any links between Moscow and Trump's campaign.

Throughout his leadership, James Comey sparked a counter-response from Democrats when he declared just days before the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's use of a personal email system. Charges against the candidate were never brought, causing criticism from the Republican party as well.

Present Charges

The federal government allege the former director lied to the legislature during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in September 2020 when he was being examined about both the email probe as well as the election interference investigation. They say he misled the legislative body by saying he had not permitted someone at the FBI to disclose to media organizations information about the agency probes.

Legal representatives also allege the defendant of "corruptly endeavoring to sway, block and impede" the panel by providing untrue information to it.

Personal Comments

Via social media Mr Comey published to his social media after he was indicted, he said he was wrongly accused and charged Trump of conducting himself like a "dictator".

"We have understood for years that there are ramifications to standing up to the former president," he stated. "We choose not to live on our knees."
"I have done nothing wrong," he continued. "So let's have a trial."

The accusations against James Comey emerged after Trump published on digital channels calling for his attorney general, Ms Bondi, take legal action against the former director and others.
