Exploring a Bizarre Steam Demo: Controlling a Piece of Feces in a Mission to Find the Toilet
Steam Next Fest is in full swing, and enthusiasts have discovered a variety of interesting independent titles. Yet, one is particularly notable for its offbeat concept. Named Unko Technica, this old-school styled side-scrolling game lets you play a character that is actually a turd trying to make its way to a commode. For those curious, "Unko" translates to "poop."
Player controls is straightforward: you only need a one button to leap. In one hundred fifty stages, you'll face mini-bosses and unlock a store to acquire skins for your dung hero.
Time your movements precisely, as a mistake requires starting over. Jump using floating orbs to launch the poop upward, traverse crumbling surfaces, and touch triggers to unlock hidden paths. Gather coins for buying more difficult levels where gameplay gets crazy.
In terms of design, the demo shows off eye-catching level designs and catchy background music. The simple graphics featuring moving abstract forms evokes memories of players of classic titles like Earthbound.
Even though difficult to recall similar titles where you are a piece of feces, interactive entertainment often featured toilet humor. For instance, in Death Stranding, you can craft grenades from character excrement. Games like Palworld and Ark: Survival Evolved utilize manure as fertilizer. And of course, such content appears heavily in Obsidian's adventure The Stick of Truth.
Putting aside its silly concept, Unko Technica has already garnered impressive awards, including taking top honors at Bandai Namco's indie contest in 2023. A playable preview is ready currently on Steam, with the complete version planned to arrive on Steam on November 19.
