Tuchel Questions Wembley Crowd Support Following Comfortable Wales Victory.
The England head coach voiced his disappointment that the England team did not enjoy more backing from the home fans during their decisive 3-0 friendly victory on Thursday night.
The manager was satisfied to see his team maintain their strong performance, with finishes from Morgan Rogers, Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the initial stages settling the contest. But, he was unhappy with the mood at the national stadium.
“We had limited sessions to prepare against a drilled team and we excelled,” Tuchel remarked. “It could have been five goals ahead at the break. We couldn’t score the fourth and fifth ones. The stadium was silent. There was no support from the crowd. Our team gave their all to win.”
“How much more can you provide in 20 minutes? We prevented them escape. When you only hear just Wales fans for half an hour, it’s sad because the team deserved more support today.”
“I support my words. We cannot do more than leading 3-0 in a rivalry match. I would have wished for a greater backing in phases where it becomes tough.”
“After halftime, to support us, there was a bit too much backing for the opposition. It might have aided us to refocus, but it is what it is and so be it.”
Squad Decisions Justified by Performance
Away from potentially starting a fight with supporters, Tuchel also created controversy by omitting Bellingham and Phil Foden from his team selection. However the move was justified by Morgan Rogers impressing again in the No 10 position and netting his maiden goal for his country.
“That’s his style,” the head coach explained. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is vying for his place.”
Bellamy Seeks Improvement from Defeat
The Wales manager hopes that his team, who face a strong Belgian side in a crucial World Cup qualifier on Monday, learn from their awful first-half display.
“This is why I wanted this match,” Bellamy said. “I need to see our standing. What are our ambitions? What is our identity? This performance fills me with motivation.”
Injury Concern for Striker
Ollie Watkins was withdrawn at the break after clattering into a post and will be a doubt when England face their next opponents in Riga in a qualifier on next week.
