UN Removes Restrictions on Syria's Leader Before White House Visit
Security Council representatives voted in favour to an American proposal removing restrictions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa before his presidential meeting the following week.
He became interim leader following his leadership in an insurgent campaign that ousted the former president in December 2024, ending thirteen long years of internal conflict.
America's diplomat to the UN Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "an emphatic political statement" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a different period" after Assad's removal.
He had been subject to global penalties as the leader of the Muslim faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), once connected to al-Qaeda. America delisted HTS from a list of global extremist entities in July.
Further Restrictions Lifted
Additionally, the United Nations lifted sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.
Syria's foreign minister welcomed the removal of the penalties, declaring through digital channels: "The nation shows its gratitude to the United States and supportive states for their support the Syrian nation and citizens."
Upcoming White House Meeting
President Sharaa's presidential meeting this coming Monday follows President Trump stated the Middle Eastern president achieved "significant advancement" in establishing peace to the previously divided state.
The two leaders convened initially during May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia while traveling through the Middle East.
After that meeting, the US president described Sharaa as a "tough guy" with a "very strong past".
His former militant faction was al-Qaeda's affiliate in Syria before he cut connections back in 2016.
Previous US Visit
Monday's visit does not represent the president's debut journey to the United States in the current year. During September, he emerged as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to address the global assembly at UN headquarters in almost 60 years.
Throughout his presentation, he stated the country had been "restoring its proper position within the global community" while showing support with the people of Gaza.
